More than 80 years on, today's HMS Prince of Wales sailed to Hood's wreck site around 300 miles west of Reykjavik to commemorate the Battle of the Denmark Strait and honour all the lives lost.

On 24 May 1941, early in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Hood was struck by several German shells, exploded, and sank with the loss of all but 3 of her crew of 1,418. Due to her publicly perceived invincibility, the loss affected British morale. The RN conducted two inquiries into the reasons for the ship's quick demise.
